What Brings on Tooth Sensitivity?

Before we jump to the remedy for sensitive teeth, lets us first understand the causes for teeth sensitivity. The tooth enamel protects the dentin and the nerves of the teeth. Various factors can result in the reduction or wearing off of that protective layer, leaving exposed nerves that react with sharp sensitivity. The most common culprit is a hard-bristled toothbrush and aggressive brushing. Unchecked or untreated gingivitis can also result in gum inflammation and exposure of the dentin. Cracked teeth as a result of an injury can suffer from plaque build-up leading to higher sensitivity. Teeth grinding at night, prolonged use of acidic mouthwashes and regular over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments can all lead to teeth discomfort and sharp sensations. Interestingly, indulging in certain acidic foods has been proven to cause tooth sensitivity.

 

Are There Home Remedies for Teeth Sensitivity?

There are several tooth sensitivity remedies that you can try at home to help reduce or stop the discomfort. Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed to fill in the holes in your dentin and enamel. Stiff bristles can aggravate the condition, leave the nerves exposed and create more microscopic holes in the dentin. If you suffer from bruxism, then get yourself a customized mouth guard to stop any teeth damage. Ensure that your gums are healthy, checked regularly and do not move away from the surface of the tooth. Regular salt water rinses twice a day can balance the pH level in your mouth, reducing bacterial growth and tooth sensitivity. Finally, you can minimize the consumption of acidic foods and drinks such as pickles, lemons, coffee, sodas and tomatoes.
