Gone are the days when standard toothpaste served all our oral
health purpose. Nowadays, a range of toothpaste with specific roles fills the
alley in grocery stores all around. Some provide relief from tooth sensitivity
pain; some removes plaque, whereas other products, known as whitening toothpaste, make our teeth
pearly white.
Do you know how these newer products work? Well, all have the same
set of ingredients, with a couple of exceptions. Here we discuss those
exceptions, and how do they make us achieve what they promise.
Anti-tooth sensitivity toothpaste
Some products have desensitizing ingredient, such as potassium
nitrate, whereas other contains active elements, like arginine and calcium,
which repairs the damage. Desensitizing ingredients kill the sensation of the
exposed nerve endings, and it may take a week to cut the sensitivity completely
with such product. The problem with such products is that the damage, which
caused sensitivity, may require further attention. Before start using a desensitizing
product, it is important to consult a dentist, as the use of paste can hide
underlying problem, which in advance stages may require procedures like the
root canal.
Whitening Toothpaste
Other than humectants and fluoride, whitening toothpaste contains abrasives, including magnesium
carbonate, calcium carbonate, and hydrated aluminium oxides; these abrasives
are considered mild. However, some like hydrogen peroxide and carbamide
peroxide can damage teeth quite badly. Therefore, it is necessary to check the
ingredients of whitening teeth. Moreover, excessive use of this type of paste
can accelerate the erosion of enamel; therefore, one must them wisely.
